A New Mixed Formulation for Elasticity
In this paper we present a new mixed variational formulation for the problem of linear elastostatics. Our formulation is very similar to the classical HellingerReissner formulation, but appears superior for finite element discretization. To make plain the relation between the Hellinger-Reissner formulation and the present one, we consider first an elastic body occupying a region g? in Euclidean...
متن کاملOverlapping Schwarz preconditioner for the mixed formulation of plane elasticity
Recently a stable pair of finite element spaces for the mixed formulation of the plane elasticity system has been developed by Arnold and Winther. Here we construct a two-level overlapping Schwarz preconditioner for the resulting discrete system. Essentially, this reduces to finding an efficient preconditioner for the form (·, ·) + (div ·,div ·) in the symmetric tensor space H(div ,Ω). The main...

متن کاملMixed finite elements for elasticity in the stress-displacement formulation
We present a family of pairs of finite element spaces for the unaltered Hellinger–Reissner variational principle using polynomial shape functions on a single triangular mesh for stress and displacement. There is a member of the family for each polynomial degree, beginning with degree two for the stress and degree one for the displacement, and each is stable and affords optimal order approximati...
متن کاملA Mixed Displacement-based Finite Element Formulation for Acoustic Fluid-structure Interaction
The solutions of fluid-structure interaction problems, using displacement-based finite element formulations for acoustic fluids, may contain spurious non-zero frequencies. To remove this deficiency, we present here a new formulation based on a three-field discretization using displacements, pressure and a “vorticity moment” as variables with an appropriate treatment of the boundary conditions. ...
